The total is still well below the average of about 70 executions per year between 1995 and 2005. States with the most executions this year were Texas, 24, Alabama, 6, and Ohio, 5.
Yesterday, the Georgia Supreme Court halted what was to be the last execution scheduled for 2009. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the court ordered a judge to consider a request by Carlton Gary, the so-called Columbus stocking strangler, for DNA testing.
