In the first half of 2011, the immigration charge of illegal reentry accounted for almost 25 percent of all federal felony prosecutions, according to an analysis of new Justice Department data.
Last week, TRAC Immigration reported there have been 18,552 new prosecutions where illegal reentry was the lead charge in 2011, continuing the steady upward trend since the first Bush administration. In 1991, there were fewer than 2,500 illegal reentry cases; in 2006, there were just over 15,000, and in 2010, more than 35,000.
