A recent study argues that when background characteristics such as psychosocial maturity and emotional reactivity are stringently controlled for, the transfer of juveniles to adult court does not have a significant impact on recidivism.

Findings from the 'Pathways to Desistance' study were published in the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s December Bulletin.

Researchers studied the effects of transfer from juvenile court to adult court on adolescent offenders in Maricopa County, AZ. They found that transferred adolescents charged with crimes such as felony assault and robbery had lower rates of re-arrest, while transferred adolescents charged with property crimes had greater rates of re-arrest.

However, “adolescents in the adult system may be at risk for disruptions in their personal development, identity formation, relationships, learning, growth in skills and competencies, and positive movement into adult status,” the study notes.

I just started a petition regarding the recommendations made by NJJDDP, “Promoting Safe Communities,” where in the recommend solutions to the problems surrounding detainees: rape by staff members, hogtied and pepper spraying, to name a few. The report also recommends that children, under no circumstances are put in adult facilities.

if you shared it with your readers maybe we can get some additional signatures from people who don’t want to see this treatment to our kids anymore. The petition can be found at: http://www.change.org/petitions/congress-email-your-u-s-representative-with-a-note-and-copy-of-report?utm_source=guides&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=petition_created

We really need all the signatures we can get so if concerned citizens would sign and share with others it would be a great help. The abuse must end, accountability is what it should be about not abuse. After all, the idea is that they are supposed to come out better than they went in and statistics show, that is not the case at all.

Thank you in advance for your compassion and help. Great article!

Cheers,

Linda
