Nearly two-thirds of all new federal prosecutions during the month of June were based on cases reported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and over half were immigration cases, according to statistics compiled by Syracuse University.
Data from the Justice Department show 14,352 new federal prosecutions during June, according to the Syracuse report, about 63 percent of which were referred by DHS.
Combined, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Department of Defense accounted for about 25 percent of new federal prosecutions.
Immigration cases represented 57 percent of all filings, and roughly one in ten cases pertained to drugs.
The data was compiled by Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which produces monthly reports about the government's criminal enforcement activities.
