Violent behaviors of youths vary within various Latino ethnic subgroups such as Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans, according to a new study. Lorena Estrada-Martínez, PhD, of Washington University in St. Louis, and researchers from the University of Michigan examined how family dynamics and neighborhood racial/ethnic composition and socioeconomic status (SES) impact youth violence among Latino subgroups.
Findings include in predominantly Latino neighborhoods, Mexican youth do not differ significantly in risk compared to Cuban youth, but in Caucasian neighborhoods Mexican youth are at more risk than Cuban youth.
