Lessons on Jail Overcrowding: A New Report Looks at Los Angeles County

A new report from the Vera Institute examines the persistent problem of overcrowding in the Los Angeles County Jail, the world's largest jail system.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Countywide Criminal Justice Coordination Committee, the report by Vera's Center on Sentencing and Corrections analyzes jail data to pinpoint the factors that lead to overcrowding. It also provides recommendations for improvements. The research comes as California begins to address prison costs and overcrowding by implementing its realignment legislation, which will divert thousands of prisoners to county jails.
