Obama Drops Juvenile Justice Funding Overhaul Plan

The Obama administration has dropped its controversial proposal to overhaul federal juvenile justice funding.

Assistant Attorney General Laurie Robinson told the House subcommittee that funds the Justice Department  on March 30 that the White House would come up with a new plan that allocates 90 percent of federal aid to improve juvenile justice by formula to the states.

The president's 2012 budget had urged taking the formula funds that are tied to states' adherence to federal standards, combining them with state block grant money, and putting the total into a $120 million competitive pot for states.

Juvenile justice advocates recently met with Office of Management and Budget officials to protest the idea, which they said would mean no funding for many states.
