A police inspector’s son has been charged with stabbing to death five young adults at a Calgary, Alberta, house party early Tuesday, reports the CBC. Four men and one woman were killed during an end-of-year university party in the community of Brentwood, just north of the University of Calgary campus. Matthew de Grood, 22, faces five counts of first-degree murder.
De Grood is the son of a veteran Calgary police officer, Inspector Doug de Grood, a 30-year veteran. Young de Grood, a 2013 Calgary graduate who had been accepted into law school, had no criminal history, and the motive for the attacks was not immediately known. “The suspect arrived at the party, obtained a large knife and targeted the victims one by one, stabbing them,” said police Chief Rick Hanson. He fled but was apprehended about 40 minutes later. Hanson called it the worst mass killing in Calgary’s history.
