Sequestration Could Hit Federal Prisons Hard; Corrections Officer Killed

If federal spending sequestration goes into effect this weekend, the federal Bureau of Prisons must handle a rising number of inmates with a major budget reduction, a cut of $338 million, says Business Insider. BOP must maintain constant security at federal prisons with even less money. A Justice Department spokesperson said the agency is "acutely concerned about staff and inmate safety should sequestration occur." On Monday night, the first federal corrections officer was killed on the job in nearly five years. Eric Williams was working in a housing unit in northern Pennsylvania when an inmate attacked him with a homemade weapon. The federal prison bureau oversees 188 facilities and contracts 16 facilities out to private prison companies. There are 217,249 inmates, a number the bureau expects to rise to 229,300 by year's end.
