House Judiciary Chair Goodlatte: Universal Background Checks Won't Pass

New House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) believes Congress may be able to pass legislation to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and strengthen background checks on gun purchasers, Goodlatte does not support “universal” background checks on all sales, Gannett News Service reports. “Where we’re going to find the ability to produce legislation is going to be focused on two things primarily,” he said yesterday. “One is improving the background check system, but universal background checks I do not think will be part of that.” Goodlatte does not believe it’s practical to require individuals selling their guns to do background checks on buyers the way that retail stores and gun dealers do. “You’ll have a lot of inconvenience to law-abiding citizens at the same time you’re not going to keep many weapons out of the hands of people who are misusing them,” he said. On immigration, Goodlatte said his committee may decide to take up immigration issues on a piecemeal basis rather than trying to reach consensus on a sweeping bill. One of the most important pieces, he said, would be the creation of a more workable program to bring in temporary farm workers from other nations to make up for a shortage of U.S. agricultural workers.
