Obama, Biden Meet With Chiefs on Guns; Immigration Proposals Due

January 28, 2013 08:04:08 am

President Obama and Vice President Biden meet today with police chiefs and sheriffs from major cities about gun violence, CNN reports. Tomorrow, Obama will launch a push for immigration reform. Obama and Biden will meet with representatives from the Major Cities Chiefs Association and Major County Sheriffs Association. Police chiefs of Aurora, Co., Oak Creek, Wi., and Newtown, Ct. — all cities that experienced mass shootings last year - will attend. Attorney General Eric Holder and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will also attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, a powerful group of senators from both parties has reached a deal on the outlines of a comprehensive immigration overhaul, a development that will drive an emotional debate on a hot-button issue unseen in Washington for more than half a decade, Politico reports. The sweeping proposal, agreed to in principle by eight senators, would seek to overhaul the legal immigration system as well as create a pathway to citizenship for the nation’s roughly 11 million illegal immigrants. Establishing that pathway would depend on whether the U.S. first implements stricter border enforcement measures and new rules ensuring immigrants have left the country in compliance with their visas.
