ACLU Seeks Special Prosecutor In Case of 137 Shots Filed by Cleveland Officers

December 14, 2012 05:48:00 am

The American Civil Liberties Union is asking Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine to appoint a special prosecutor handle the investigation into a Cleveland police chase and shooting that left two suspects dead, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The group also is asking that local law enforcement involved in the pursuit in any way be removed from the investigation.

DeWine said his office is investigating the case but has no authority to appoint a special prosecutor in this case. The shooting Nov. 29 came at the end of a 25-minute police chase that zigzagged through Cleveland and ended in a middle school parking lot in East Cleveland. Officers fired 137 shots at the car that was fleeing from them. Officers believed they were being shot at and, at one point, they reported that the car had rammed a police car. Officials have said that the two victims may have been unarmed as no gun or shell casings were found in the car.
