Chertoff, Napolitano Seen As Possible AGs Pending Election Result

October 29, 2012 10:37:00 am

Reuters reports on possible candidates for Attorney General and FBI director, depending on who wins the presidential election. FBI director Robert Mueller's term was extended by Congress until September 2013. People discussed for attorney general in a Romney administration include former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, former Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip, since moved to the law firm Kirkland & Ellis; former White House Deputy Counsel David Leitch, general counsel at Ford Motor Co; and J. Michael Luttig, general counsel at Boeing Co.

Romney could turn to a governor, such as Virginia's Bob McDonnell, or a senator, such as Jon Kyl of Arizona, if he wants an attorney general with more political experience. If Obama is re-elected, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is a possible successor to Holder. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, also mentioned as a future Obama attorney general, told Financial Times the U.S. capital is "not quite my cup of tea." For FBI director, for either Obama or Romney include Patrick Fitzgerald, a former U.S. attorney in Chicago who has joined the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Kenneth Wainstein, a former assistant attorney general for national security now at the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.
