7 Percent of U.S. Households Hit By Identity Theft in 2010

About 8.6 million American households experienced some kind of identity theft last year, according to a new report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, representing about 7 percent of all U.S. households.

While only a slight increase over 2009, it marks a significant rise from 5.5 percent in 2005. BJS traced much of the jump to an uptick in the use of stolen credit card accounts.
