One in five states fails to track youth recidivism, according to a new report by the non-profit Council of State Governments (CSG) and National Reentry Resource Center.
The organizations today released two publications that examine state juvenile correction agencies and explain what state and local governments can do to improve juvenile justice outcomes.
Researchers surveyed every state's juvenile correctional agencies and found that 20 percent do not track recidivism data. Even among those that do, the study finds, most track “only one type of contact with the justice system.”
In order to encourage states to keep more data, the organizations also released a white paper “that offers guiding principles and recommendations based on what's been proven.”
Recommendations include engaging families in the decision-making process and discarding curfews and “scared straight” programs.
