Will Arizona Immigration Law Fizzle Like Georgia's Did?

In 2006, Georgia approved what at the time was considered the nation's most stringent law to crack down on illegal immigrants, says Governing magazine. It allowed the state to audit any employer doing business with state or local government to ensure that its workers had proper documentation. Since then, how many employers has the state audited? Zero.

The rule sounded tough, but the legislature never appropriated any money for audits. With Arizona having approved a new immigration law that now is considered the nation's toughest, Georgia's story is a reminder that when it comes to immigration enforcement, states' reach often exceeds their grasp. "There was not much substance or enforcement in Senate Bill 529 in its final passage," says Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials. "It was more to send a message that Georgia wanted to be at the forefront of states trying to regulate immigration." In Arizona, where many police chiefs oppose the new law, it's possible that officers won't be suspecting residents are illegal immigrants very often. Arizona's measure could end up like an Oklahoma immigration law that, when it was passed in 2007, was another contender for the "nation's toughest" title. Key provisions have been blocked in court.

Why do you need it? Because crime is out of control? Not. Documents released by the FBI itself this month show that the crime level in the state of AZZ has dropped dramatically over the last decade. What is more the 4 safest cities in the US are in states bordering Mexico. Surprise surprise surprise.

AZZ’s problems are related to fiscal decisions. The govt of the state has made many mistakes that have been costly and have nothing to do with immigration.

Admit it, AZZ is a stinky place to be.

Anything disgusting from the redneck racist state of Georgia will not suprise me. Congress must act on a just and comprehensive immigration reform and not allow modern day KKK Teabeggars to flaunt their hate and xenophobia.

The only cited observer on this topic is a spokesman for some organization known as the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials. Is it a surprise to any reader capable of critical assessment that Mr. Gonzalez has a negative opinion?

Further, this article cites “In Arizona, where many police chiefs oppose the new law, ….” Where might one find a reliable survey of ALL AZ police chiefs showing a preponderance of those whose recorded opinions state an opposition to SB 1070?

The conclusion of the political blogger, Josh Goodman, publishing in the obscure “Governing” website states a possibility that “AZ law enforcement officers won’t suspect many of undocumented immigration status” or “Arizona’s measure could end up like an Oklahoma immigration law that, when it was passed in 2007, was another contender for the “nation’s toughest” title. Key provisions have been blocked in court.”

Or, like Georgia’s measure, SB 1070 will be an unfunded mandate.

THE CRIME REPORT discredits itself by the repetition of such scattershot propaganda.

All these outcomes could result. Also, pigs could fly on the second Tuesday of next week.

Why doesn’t THE CRIME REPORT publish an authoritative comparison of AZ’s SB 1070 + CA’s PC 834b?
This would be fact-based information concerning crime and not silly “what-if” speculation.

This is just one of those things that has so many pro’s and con’s that it will never be a resolved issue. It’s good for our economy in some ways but why should taxpayers be responsible for illegal immigrants? It’s going to be an ongoing issue for a long time.

I hope AZ KEEPS this law in effect.

The lawsuits are completely bogus. There is no racism involved. You can be any nationality and still get charged for not having the proper documentation. You are required to have a drivers license on you when you are driving. You go to other countries and you are required to have your passport on you at ALL times. Why should it be any different here.

There is already a national law to carry some sort of documentation to be in this country. Again, just like any other country but now we are starting to enforce it. People will need to return back to Mexico, Asia, UK, etc… UNLESS you have the proper documentation. There is nothing new here except we are inforcing the law now. It has NOTHING to do with RACE. Everyone thinks it is about the Mexicans. Well guess what, we have Asians, people from UK, and many other countries who are here illegally. Why is everyone assuming we are pointing out the Mexicans.

We wonder why the economy is hurting so bad. Well there are many people who are taking jobs away from the American people because they are working “under” the table. So for those of us who PAY taxes cannot find a job to support their family.

Every state should be following AZ. We need to regroup America and get us back on our feet. If you do not support AZ new law then you are NOT a true American.

Ha!!
Yeah, Az “needs” more lawsuits!! Right on!! This same state thats already on the verge on bankruptcy?

Az can’t even pay its teachers. Yet, your ok with paying out lawsuit judgments, that will surely follow this bigoted law!!

Wow!!

Got an idea for you Marty,

if your so ok with this law, and since the lawsuits that have already begun, prior to this law even taking effect? Not to mention the countless seemingly never ending “boycotts” that are continually mounting, and further pushing this state into economic bankruptcy.

(Take note: of Arpaio’s “civil rights violations”, and all the lawsuits payouts he has been involved with courtesy of 287g?? To the tune of 43million!! Yep, our tax money, shelled out to as “Democratic Diva” put it recently on KJZZ in Phx, do to Arpaio being one “expensive habit”! )

Than so be it!!

Just pick up my share as well, send me my refund, as I have better uses for my monies, including paying the teachers salaries.

Truth08

P/S Good luck with that “we need it” agenda.

Especially when we have no more education system.
