A new paper by the Police Foundation reveals that more crimes are going unreported now than a generation ago, and call the crime rate estimates of the National Crime Victimization Survey "seriously biased." The authors looked at data from 1967 and 2006 and saw that rates of non-reporting rose between two and 10 percent for categories including robbery, simple and aggravated assault, auto theft and sex offenses. "The bottom line, then," write the authors, "is that...the vast majority of crimes are still not reported to the police." The paper concludes by remarking that there is scant research focusing on the circumstances surrounding crime reporting.
