Public Defenders: A National Survey

11.30.09defenseA new publication from the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports the results of a 2007 survey of public defender offices nationwide. According to the report, 964 public defender offices handled 6 million caseloads, employed 17,000 full-time attorneys and spent $2.4 billion in 2007. Broken down, the average county-based offended handled approximately 106 felony cases, 164 misdemeanor cases and two appeals per year.
