2009 was a particularly perilous year for police officers involved in gun disputes, reports the Associated Press. The number killed in the line of duty by gunfire increased 24 percent from 2008, say preliminary statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. As of Saturday, 47 police officers had died nationwide after being shot while on duty, up from 38 for the same time in 2008, which was the lowest number of gunfire deaths since 1956.
Experts are surprised by the number of officers who have been targeted by gunmen. "There's an increasingly desperate population out there," said Eugene O'Donnell, a professor of police studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. "Other than in rare cases for ideological reasons, we really haven't seen people taking on the cops head-to-head. Something is amiss. It should be cause for grave concern." Contributing to this year's spike are cases in which several officers were shot and killed in groups: four officers last month near Seattle; four in Oakland in March; three officers in Pittsburgh in April; and two officers in Okaloosa County, Fl., in April.

it might just surprise you but the most officer deaths have occurred where gun laws are the strictist,,so have violent crimes,,,,,,i think this sends a message we all need to be packing heat,, make john Q robber question if he might get shot by a citizen packing

Would be interesting to see what the correlation is between Officer deaths and legislation restricting police search and seizure by state. NJ Officer here, and the AG’s recent adjustments to Search and Seizure guidelines are just making it more difficult and dangerous.

This is the crux of the matter: more gangs that are unafraid of our criminal ‘justice’ system. They know they can usually bail out, then they’re gone. The proverbial Revolving Door) Also the criminals know the police have vests, and shoot accordingly. (Google Mogadishu Drill, or Failure Drill)
An old adage says “A man paid to do a skill will only be as good as he HAS to be; the man who does it out of interest or necessity, will be as good as he CAN be.” Our police here only qualify once a year, and only have to shoot 70% on a nice, dry, warm, well-lit range, shooting paper targets that don’t shoot back or move. Wooo! Please give me a CC civilian with a love for shooting any day.

Wow Mike, if you aren’t just the poster boy for knee-jerk NRA rhetoric. Those in the criminal justice field study trends and statistics to help make the country safer. I find it a bit offensive that you think the National Law Enforcement Memorial is making up statistics on the number of officers shot and killed. They keep very close records of officer deaths in order to increase officer safety. Because of their research they have made drastic improvements in officers training and equipment that have saved countless lives.
The bottom line is too many dangerous people have access to dangerous weapons, and are not afraid to use them. By denying the facts, you and the rest of the gun nut crowd might as well be buying them the ammunition.

spare me, all hype. I don’t believe it, nor should you. As always, I think this is where the “sources” used were probably questionable and semi solid; AND remember, 67.5% of all statistics are made up. But, Im confident this will be just another catalyst USED to strip “us” (you, american citizens) of more of our civil rights, removing your right to buy, own, and carry a gun for example. Im surprised they didn’t blame it on domestic “terwooowists” … Gimme a break.
But most will accept it, without questions, and “agree” to give more of their rights
