A study of 677 shooting victims in Philadelphia found that people packing guns were far likelier to get shot — and killed — than the unarmed, reports USA Today. The University of Pennsylvania compared the victims with other residents of similar age, sex and ethnicity, and accounted for socioeconomic factors and other "potentially confounding differences."
The conclusions: "On average, guns did not protect those who possessed them from being shot in an assault. Although successful defensive gun uses occur each year, the probability of success may be low for civilian gun users in urban areas. Such users should reconsider their possession of guns or, at least, understand that regular possession necessitates careful safety countermeasures." The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health.
