Cassell, a former law clerk for Chief Justice Warren Burger, was a Justice Department official and a federal prosecutor in Virginia. He served as a law professor for 10 years before becoming a federal trial judge in Utah in 2002. In 2007, he resigned from the bench and returned to the law school to “teach, write, and litigate on issues relating to crime victims rights and criminal justice reform.” Cassell has advocated reform of sentencing laws.
