“Immigration enforcement by local police is counterproductive to community policing efforts. It undermines the trust and cooperation of immigrant communities, could lead to charges of racial profiling, and increases our response time to urgent calls for service,” says Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt. The Houston Chronicle quoted Hurtt in support of a Police Foundation report, quoted yesterday in Crime & Justice News, critical of the federal program encouraging local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws.
Houston is joining a federal program to check the immigration status of jail inmates. Hurtt said that will require the assignment of 22 police officers to receive federal training and cost an estimated $1.5 million to $2 million a year to operate. The chief also said the department pledged years ago it would not allow officers to question residents at random about their immigration status.

I disagree. Immigration enforcement by local police is productive to community policying efforts. The fact that this author and other pro-open border advocates continue to ignore that some of the the 9/11 hijackers could have been stopped by police officers when they were stopped for minor traffic violations. The best way for the U.S. to protect this country from illegal immigrants and potential terrorists within our countries is to insist that our police officers take an additional few minutes to verify the immigration status of those they pull over or detain. Additionally, Americans need to demand that Senator Reid and the Democrats pass E-Verify and the SAVE acts in order to assist our police officers in doing their jobs. The fact that Senator Reid and the Democrats refuse to pass these two pieces of legislation and instead, insist on ramming another AMNESTY down the throats of American citizens simply proves that the Democrats are not concerned with securing our borders and protecting the American people.
Whenever Democrats try to defend themselves by bringing up the “virtual fence,” be sure and ask them about the report in which a DHS official points out how ineffective the virtual fence is and why they haven’t built more of the 2-layered fence that has already been PAID FOR and has been proven to be a better deterrent than this “virtual fence” which does nothing except maybe show video of illegal immigrants crossing whenever the cameras and software actually work.
