Contrary to FBI statistics, more than 100 Detroit homicides were left off the books last year, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy told the Detroit Free Press. Worthy said the Detroit Police Department underreported that 306 people were killed in 2008. She said the homicide number is actually 423. The FBI reported this week that murders last year dropped 22 percent in Detroit, from 392 in 2007 to 306.
Rod Liggons, Detroit police spokesman, said Police Chief James Barren acknowledged that the homicide numbers reported to the FBI last year were erroneous, mostly because of misclassifications. For example, if a person is shot and dies three days later, that shooting may not be upgraded from assault with a weapon to a homicide. Barren said the number of homicides was likely 339.

The Detroit Police Department does need leadership. Personally, I have taken the liberty to find out on my own the facts and of what some might seem to blame on the police Departments as the poor reporting, and evaluations. A resident of Detroit, in the public sector, riding public buses, and cautiously reaching my own set goals about my own life. The Detroit Police Department are too concerned about their own lives. Murders, homicides, fatal accidents, and horrible incidents and I’m concerned about mine and my childrens. The facts are in the situations that seem little at first and then exult into bigger more serious crimes. The criminals know the tactics of the policing departments and they know the department officers. They stand on the front stalls of the buildings for GOD sake. I’m not a police officer and woundn’t want the job of taking my fellow man to jail but I am behind doing what is right. I can honestly comd ment to you that while their jobs are tough, the many crimes that occur in Michigan because of the lowly, lonely, oppression that our economic status has some of us starving to survive in make it difficult to live … crime heightens and the load of worry, work, and workmanship suffers. By example, my own situation heightened my frustration to wanting protection, serenity, and a good feeling when coming and going home. But by experience, an officer (female), responded to me on such a level that both my mind and my situation would understand. I asked the officer what is that I need to do to obtain a fire arm. The officer stated to, “…No..you might shoot somebody and then you will end up in jail…” I respect that officer for that and I encourage Prosecuter Kym Worthy to do her job in light of the fact that someone else has failed in theirs.
