One student was killed, three others wounded, and a suspect is in custody after a shooting today outside a Northern Arizona University residence hall in Flagstaff, reports the Arizona Republic. University Police Chief Greg Fowler said the shootings were preceded by a confrontation between two “student groups,” during which a freshman he identified as Steven Jones, 18, took out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking four people.
Fowler said all four victims were male students. The shootings reportedly took place outside a dormitory for members of fraternities and sororities. University President Rita Cheng called the shootings an “isolated and unprecedented incident” and assured students that the campus was safe. Cheng said classes would continue as normal but that “this is not going to be a normal day at NAU.”
