As part of a continuing investigation, San Diego CityBeat uncovers widespread abuse and violence at the five juvenile detention facilities operated by the San Diego County probation department. Figures obtained through a request under the California Public Records Act show, for example, an increase in the number of juvenile detainees transported to hospitals or psychiatric facilities during the first six months of 2012. Other highlights include widespread use of pepper spray by guards. Reporter Dave Maas is a 2012 Fellow in the John Jay/Tow Juvenile Justice Reporting project.
